MONIKA SZPENER | WORKS | TRAFO POL

Concept project of a neon sign which is to be placed on the façade of the the TRAFO Trafostacja Sztuki in Szczecin. The neon will say: "This house nurtures people to become shameless, wise, strong, loyal, disobedient, wayward, mean, reprehensible and neglected social pariahs". It is the very inscription that adorned the façade of a school building situated in the exact same spot in 18th century as today the TRAFO gallery. This archaic-sounding sentence has a multivocal significance in relation to a gallery as a place whose ambition it is to educate people through culture. It's one of the projects that illustrates specific sculptor's thinking about space. What is important to Monika Szpener is the multifaceted context of the site and the drive towards recycling, renewal and restoration of meanings that already exist in a given space.
